Rumour has it

I am very apprehensive on writing something about this topic. Would I instill fear? Panic?

But wouldn’t you rather know?

What I have here are questions, not answers. What I have here are doubts, not certainty.

7.2 and 6.7 magnitude earthquakes in the South China Sea on the 26th December 2006, 0:26-20:34 Beijing Time, has left us feeling scared of being Internet-less.

But could that be the only remnants of an earthquake that size?

Rumour has it that Brunei is in danger of a tsunami. But some people say… we’re protected by our extensive mangrove forests and outlying offshore islands.

But then again, how come in Sabah and Sarawak, they’ve gone all tsunami red alert. Don’t they have pretty much the same geography as us?

The people from our sandspit areas in Tutong, Kampung Danau and Kuala Tutong has started their prayers of Tolak Bala and Sembahyang Hajat as they will be the first one affected in the event of a tsunami.

Rumour has it also, some people have been relocated from those coastal areas to more inland areas in Sungai Liang.

What is the real situation?

Like I said, I have questions, not answers. Doubt, not certainties.

  1. Hehe. I thought your post was about that Jennifer Anniston movie.

So anyway, oh my. I haven’t heard such rumours. If you have more info on this, please do not hesitate to inform us too. Scary lah..

  2. The 2004 tsunami demonstrated one thing well – those tsunamis move bullet-fast through the ocean before slowing down near the shore. The quake was on the 26th – you posted on the 28th. Therefore, you’re probably safe, though your internet may still have problems.

Any talk of tsunamis in Brunei are coming from the same science-impaired SMS rumour network that gets people to spend their free evenings in front of school gates so they can “see the ghosts”.

  3. China Law Blog: Our internet access here in Brunei has been somewhat patchy but bearable. Sometimes it gets disconnected for no reason yes but that is nothing really new (our sole internet provider is not really well known for its excellent service). However, it seems that some parts of Brunei is having more dificulties than others.

  4. My connection these past few days have been fine, except for those days when it was really bad, I couldn’t even see the proper light of a 404 error page. LOL.

But I’ve seen the news about sea-lying cables being repaired ASAP. Looks real dangerous, but people are complaining, so hats off to the diving networkers! 😀
